Western hat size chart

Cowboy hats use the same US fitted sizing as dress hats: the size is your head diameter in inches. Most western brands make sizes 6 ¾ to 7 ⅝ and charge extra for 7 ¾ and up. Here is the full conversion.

Stetson cowboy hat sizes

Stetson sells most hats in fitted fractions and some in letter sizes. Most letters cover two fitted sizes, so a Stetson Medium is 7 to 7 ⅛ and a Large is 7 ¼ to 7 ⅜.

Felt vs straw fit

Felt hats are sized true and hold their shape. A quality fur-felt hat will mould to your head over the first month and can be stretched about half a size by a hatter with a hat jack. Do not buy a felt hat that is tight and hope it stretches.

Straw hats do not stretch. They are also more likely to run a touch small because the sweatband is stitched to a rigid crown. If you are between sizes in straw, size up and add a foam sizing strip.

Fit tips

  • Measure about 1 inch above your eyebrows, level all the way around. Western hats sit lower than baseball caps.
  • The hat should stay put when you tip your head forward but not leave a red line after ten minutes.
  • Use foam sizing tape inside the sweatband to take a hat down by up to half a size.
  • Store the hat upside down on its crown, never on its brim, so the brim keeps its shape.

How to measure your head

  1. 1 Use a soft tape measure, or a string and a ruler.
  2. 2 Wrap it around your head where the hat will sit: about 1 cm (⅜ in) above your ears and across the middle of your forehead.
  3. 3 Keep the tape level and snug, not tight. Do not pull it in.
  4. 4 Read the number where the tape overlaps. Measure two or three times and use the largest value.
  5. 5 Type the number into the calculator, or find it in the chart.

How should a cowboy hat fit?

Snug enough to stay on in a breeze, loose enough that you feel no pressure at the temples or forehead. Two fingers should slide under the sweatband at the sides with light resistance.

What size cowboy hat is a Large?

For most western brands a Large is 7 ¼ to 7 ⅜ (58 to 59 cm). Stetson’s Large is the same 7 ¼ to 7 ⅜.

Can a cowboy hat be stretched?

Felt hats can be stretched about half a size by a hatter using steam and a hat stretcher. Straw hats cannot be stretched.

What is the most common cowboy hat size?

7 ⅛ and 7 ¼ for men and 7 for women, the same as other hat styles.
