Fedora size chart

Fedoras use the same fitted sizes as other dress hats. Quality felt fedoras come in every eighth, while fashion fedoras often use S, M, L and XL.

How a fedora should fit

  • The sweatband sits level, about 1 cm above your ears and across the middle of the forehead.
  • You can slide one finger under the band with light resistance.
  • The hat stays on when you tip your head forward.
  • If it leaves a red line after 15 minutes, it is too small.

Men’s and women’s fedora sizes

Most men wear a fedora between 7 ⅛ and 7 ⅜. Women’s fedoras use the same sizes but are stocked mostly from 6 ⅞ to 7 ¼, and many have an inner drawstring to fine-tune the fit.

Fit tips

  • A felt fedora that is slightly big can be taken in with foam sizing tape behind the sweatband.
  • A hatter can stretch felt by about half a size. Straw cannot be stretched.

How to measure your head

  1. 1 Use a soft tape measure, or a string and a ruler.
  2. 2 Wrap it around your head where the hat will sit: about 1 cm (⅜ in) above your ears and across the middle of your forehead.
  3. 3 Keep the tape level and snug, not tight. Do not pull it in.
  4. 4 Read the number where the tape overlaps. Measure two or three times and use the largest value.
  5. 5 Type the number into the calculator, or find it in the chart.

Should a fedora be tight or loose?

Snug. It should stay on in a breeze without pressing on your temples.

What size fedora is a Medium?

Usually 7 to 7 ⅛ (56 to 57 cm). Check the maker’s chart, because some run Medium up to 7 ¼.
