Men’s hat size conversion chart

Men’s and women’s hats use the same size scale; the difference is which sizes are stocked. Men’s hats typically run from 6 ¾ (54 cm) to 8 (64 cm), and most men wear 7 ⅛ to 7 ⅜.

Average men’s hat size

The average adult male head is about 57.5 cm (22 ⅝ in), which is a fitted 7 ¼ and a Large in most letter sizing. About 7 in 10 men wear 7 to 7 ⅜. Only about 4% of men measure 7 ⅝ or larger, and they will find better choice in brands with extended sizes such as New Era (to 8 ¼) and western hat makers (to 8).

Hat sizes for big heads

If you measure 62 cm (24 ⅜ in) or more, look for hats marked 7 ¾, 7 ⅞, 8 or XXL. Flexfit XXL fits up to 64 cm. New Era 59FIFTY goes to 8 ¼ (65.4 cm). Snapbacks marked One Size usually stop around 62 cm, so a big-head snapback should say XL or L/XL.

Fit tips

  • Short hair or a shaved head: buy the exact size or go down ⅛ for stretch styles.
  • Long or thick hair: measure over the hair, not under it.
  • A hat that fits should leave no mark after 15 minutes.

How to measure your head

  1. 1 Use a soft tape measure, or a string and a ruler.
  2. 2 Wrap it around your head where the hat will sit: about 1 cm (⅜ in) above your ears and across the middle of your forehead.
  3. 3 Keep the tape level and snug, not tight. Do not pull it in.
  4. 4 Read the number where the tape overlaps. Measure two or three times and use the largest value.
  5. 5 Type the number into the calculator, or find it in the chart.
