Women’s hat size chart

Most women measure between 54 and 58 cm (21 ¼ to 22 ⅞ in), which is a fitted 6 ¾ to 7 ¼. The chart covers the full range from 52 to 60 cm.

How to measure with long hair or a bun

  • Measure with your hair styled the way you will wear the hat.
  • For a ponytail or bun that sits under the hat, measure over it and expect to go up half a size.
  • For a bun at the back, a cap with an adjustable strap or a ponytail opening fits better than a fitted cap.
  • Thick braids or curls can add 1 to 2 cm. Measure over them.

Women’s letter sizes

Women’s hats sold as S, M and L usually map to S = 54 to 55 cm, M = 56 to 57 cm and L = 58 to 59 cm. Unisex and men’s lines often start a size larger, so check whether a size chart is for women’s or unisex hats.

Fit tips

  • Sun hats and fedoras often have an inner drawstring or sizing band that takes them in by up to 2 cm.
  • Knit beanies for women are usually one size and fit about 54 to 58 cm.

How to measure your head

  1. 1 Use a soft tape measure, or a string and a ruler.
  2. 2 Wrap it around your head where the hat will sit: about 1 cm (⅜ in) above your ears and across the middle of your forehead.
  3. 3 Keep the tape level and snug, not tight. Do not pull it in.
  4. 4 Read the number where the tape overlaps. Measure two or three times and use the largest value.
  5. 5 Type the number into the calculator, or find it in the chart.

Are women’s hat sizes different from men’s?

No. The size system is the same. Women’s hats are made in smaller ranges and some brands label them differently, so a women’s Medium can be smaller than a unisex Medium.

What size hat is a women’s small?

Usually 54 to 55 cm (21 ¼ to 21 ⅝ in), a fitted 6 ¾ to 6 ⅞.

How do I convert a women’s hat size from UK to US?

Add one eighth. A UK 7 is a US 7 ⅛.
