Toddler hat sizes by age

Most toddlers measure 45 to 51 cm (17 ¾ to 20 in). Hats sold as toddler, 2T to 4T or 1 to 3 years cover this range.

Infant vs toddler hat size

Infant hats fit up to about 46 cm (18 in), which most children reach around their first birthday. Toddler hats start where infant sizes end and run to about 51 cm (20 in), the size of a typical four year old.

Toddler caps and snapbacks

Toddler baseball caps are almost always adjustable and fit about 48 to 52 cm (19 to 20 ½ in). The smallest fitted caps are youth 6 (about 48 cm), so only older toddlers with larger heads fit them.

Fit tips

Choose a sun hat with a chin strap, because toddlers pull hats off.
Buy for today’s measurement plus up to 1 cm, not a full size up.

How to measure your head

1 Use a soft tape measure, or a string and a ruler.
2 Wrap it around your head where the hat will sit: about 1 cm (⅜ in) above your ears and across the middle of your forehead.
3 Keep the tape level and snug, not tight. Do not pull it in.
4 Read the number where the tape overlaps. Measure two or three times and use the largest value.
5 Type the number into the calculator, or find it in the chart.
